Willie Mae McCoy
I joined Summerville in the 1970's because it was the closest church within walking distance. I stayed because I love Summerville: the people, the service, the fellowship and my pastor.
I have been President of District 1, which is the oldest District at the Church, for over 20 years and I am a member of Usher Board #1.
Look for Sister Willie Mae McCoy's welcoming face as she greets new friends at the door or guides them down the aisle every 1st Sunday for Morning Worship at 11:00 am and Communion Service at 4:00 pm.
Grace and mercy, God’s blessing for his people (Ephesians 2:8-9). At Summerville, we know no man comes to God but through Jesus Christ (John 14:6). We are a church of believers who know Jesus came not to be served, but to serve by giving His life for you and me. Because He died and rose on the third day, our salvation is free. By accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, our lives have been transformed and our souls set free. Here at Summerville, we are committed to do God’s work and share His gospel. Let’s lift Jesus higher and higher because He is worthy to be praised.
God Bless You,
Rev. James W. Henry
Rev. Dr. James Wilbert Henry is the pastor of Summerville Missionary Baptist Church. He was born on December 2, 1945 to the late Joe and Agnes Henry. He is married to the former Patricia Hill Williams and is the proud father of Juan, Niconya, Shawanda, Serena (deceased), Sean (deceased), and Nishaunda (deceased).
He grew up in the Mixon town area of Jacksonville, FL and graduated from Stanton Senior High School in 1963. After graduation, he was hired by May Cohens before moving to Kansas City for Air Line training school. He received high honors in the program but was unable to find a job. Not deterred he elected to serve his country in the United States Navy before his honorable discharged.
Having faithfully attended Emanuel Baptist Church all of his childhood, at the age of nineteen he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior, and was Baptist by the late Rev. S.L. Badger. At Emanuel, he was a faithful servant serving in the male chorus and as Assistant Scout Master for the church's Boy Scout group. In 1975, he was ordained as a Deacon and served as Church treasurer.
A desire to grow in the ministry led him to pursue his educational goals when he enrolled at Progressive Baptist Seminary. He received his Bachelors of Theology Degree from the Progressive Baptist Seminary. In October 1988, he received his calling from the Lord and on December 10, 1989; he was ordained as a Minister. Yet his thirst for greater spiritual understanding grew. His passion for spiritual growth led him to continue his educational journey by enrolling at Truth Bible College to pursue his graduate degree. He now holds a Master's of Divinity Degree and Doctoral of Ministry degree from Truth Bible College.
In August 1992, the Holy Spirit led him to Summerville Missionary Baptist Church where he has overseen the spiritual and physical growth of a dedicated congregation through a re-awakening of hearts and a reestablishment of commitment to God’s word.
His spiritual vision has seen to the saving of souls and the building of a new Worship Center and renovation of the old sanctuary building into a new Fellowship Hall. Under his leadership, Summerville has become a living testimony, an open of declaration of the power of faithful prayer as evidenced by our physical and spiritual growth.
